Abstract

The byproducts formed after gamma radiation at dose level below 25 kGy are in trace quantities and in order to detect them it is necessary to use specific and sensitive analytical techniques. The use of developed techniques such as the Lyoluninescence, the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and the UV Spectrometry allows for the discrimination between irradiated and non-irradiated carbohydrates like glucose and Trehalose. The quantitative data of stable radicals given by these techniques suggests the possibility to use them also in postdosimetry analysis. Trehalose is shown to be a choice excipient to formulations to be sterilized by gamma radiation because of the low quantity of radicals, that are formed and absence of any visible color modification as compared with Glucose.

Key words: gamma radiation, Glucose, Trehalose, radical stability
