1992 Degree: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering.

Thesis title: “Drying of materials by direct contact with a heated surface”

     Present position

Associate professor in Department of Chemical Engineering, Technical “Gh. Asachi” University of Iasi,                 Romania

As associate professor, I am presently involved in the following undergraduate courses:

          At Technical University of Iasi:

Transport phenomena and unit operations in chemical industry
               Intensification of transport phenomena
               Unit operations with mass transfer
               Project Engineering of Process Plants
Drying of materials course for Master degree

At Technical College of Iasi: Unit operations in chemical industry

I am also supervising about 3-4 Master students a year

My main course, “Transport phenomena and unit operations in chemical industry” contains the theory of transport of momentum, heat and mass transfer applied to a large number of chemical engineering applications. The general idea is to try to model the industrial processes based on the physical phenomena occurring. As the process is broken down into smaller processes and smaller details, the phenomena can to a large extent be described by fundamental equations and existing empirical correlations. This involves detailed knowledge (both modeling and experimental) about transport process on a molecular level in different materials.

I possess fundamental and general knowledge in the chemical and food industry. This background allows me to undertake various problems.

     Main professional interests

          Heat transfer

Heat transfer is probably the most common unit operation within chemical as well within food processing industries. The control of the flow of heat at desired rate is of prime importance in the design and operation of the heat transfer equipment in the processing industry.

          Drying

My main contribution in the science is referring to the drying operation. My doctoral thesis treats the procedure used for drying of materials by direct contact with a heated surface. The physical model of drying and the mechanism have been elaborated.

I have a special interest for Lyophilization (Freeze-Drying). For couple of years, I have a rewarding collaboration with Thomas A. Jennings Ph.D., Chairman of International Society of Lyophilization - Freeze Drying, regard to the mechanism of freeze-drying and steam sterilization of dryers.

As visiting scientist at University of Karlstad, Sweden, I took part in the study of wood fuel (chips) drying in a pilot plant using superheated steam as medium drying.

Also, in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Iasi, I studied the drying in a fix bed, fluidized or vibrato-fluidized bed as well as spouted bed of different materials.

     Other activities

I have been responsible for different activities to develop the graduate studies in various ways (graduate courses, information materials). I am an active member of Chemical Engineering Society from Romania.

I am an author of scientific papers, patents, books and research contracts with various chemical enterprises.
